When I came up with the idea of a balloon backdrop, I intended for it to be a fun place to take photos and capture the spirit of the joint birthday party. If nobody else wanted to take party pictures, I knew I would at least get good use out of it. I did not plan on using it as a cake smash backdrop, but if I would have thought of it, that would totally have been the sole purpose I made it! Not that I do a huge cake smash moment… I gave Betty a cupcake, she played with it for 5 minutes and then wanted up. We cleaned her up and called it a cake smash. I just can’t bring myself to bake and decorate a full cake only to have a one year old squeeze it and spread icing everywhere… A cupcake did the same job. And the balloons supplied the perfect backdrop for it! Much better than picking a plain wall to put her up against like usual.

I made this balloon backdrop the morning of the party. The heat made a few of the balloons pop or shrink, so I didn’t want to make it too early.
DIY Balloon Backdrop:
1. Tie string to a stick. I hung the stick to start. From there I tied on the string which I would tie the water balloons to.
2. Start at the top. Blow up a water balloon and tie the balloon at the top of the string.
3. Repeat step 2 working your way down the string. I tied 10 balloons to each string and used 5 strings.
4. Tape the string down when you reach the bottom.
